  1. Great tunes, those! I haven't played the DD Neon, but I did pay Kauffman for his OST. And that's probably my favorite track on the album.

I don't have much in the way of salient anecdotes, so I'll leave you to continue my rendition of "Sky High".

    Fryyyy-ing Hiiigh! Feeering Guuuuuuuudd!!!

    3. I didn't realize that Kaufman did the OST for DD until I looked it up for this episode. had heard a few tracks, and enjoyed them. This one being my favorite - tickles my 80s pop fancy.

    1. Me either. Just finished boarding up our windows so we can make a hasty exit tomorrow if needed. At the very least I expect to be without power, and thus, without the ability to podcast!

  3. I've been on a quest to find the oldest games that have singing lately, so this was a fun episode for me to listen to. I think the oldest title I know of with a full length vocal track is probably Tales of Phantasia on the Super Famicom, which has title music with an entire vocal part. Pretty impressive for the old 16 bit days. I found another title with extended vocals on the Super Famicom at some point, but can't remember the title anymore and haven't been able to find it again. Darn.

I remember being really impressed with the title screen music to Skate or Die II back in the NES days which is even a bit earlier in VGM history, but that doesn't really have a full vocal part, just samples that say "Skate or Die. Die die die die!"

Another interesting vocal track I found while searching out old singing VGM was for a mahjong title on the Neo Geo called Mahjong Kyou Retsuden. I was going to use it on my KJNG show at VGMJB as an excuse to have Hakama visit, since the game also has instrumental versions of the singing tracks, but I opted to sing my own karaoke instead.

Anyway, these were fun selections. I didn't know about this Ninja Turtles musical. You've given me something to look forward to for searching on the internet. Also, man, that enthusiasm in the vocals for "Sky High" in Daytona USA just can't be beat. The pronunciation can, but not the enthusiasm. So much fun!

    1. JT, could you have been thinking about the theme to Clay Fighter? I was going to mention it above, but forgot until now: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FsTJh0fSh6Q

Another one I’ve heard recently on the podcast circuit is the Cannon Fodder theme song, for the Amiga CD: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wSpBmGR5r7g

There was also Gods for Amiga, but it had more of a sample feel, a la that famous “Oh Yeah” song from Yello(you know, from Ferris Beuller and the Twix commercials):

    2. Skate or Die I am familiar with, but I don't know if I've ever heard the Phantasia piece. I think I'll go check it out.

Of course, you could always cheat and listen to the FF6 Opera. That's almost as good as real vocals.

That mahjong title sounds familiar, but who knows why. Maybe something on another podcast?

I remember loving "comin' out of our shells," but I am certain it does not hold up.

    3. Clay Fighters is a good one! Michael over at Forever Sound Version does a good job covering Cannon Fodder in one of their "VGM Battle" episodes. I think I mentioned that... somewhere. Maybe last episode?

    4. Also, Kudos to you, ND for leaving off the W in Yello. Not your first time at the rodeo.

    5. Whoa! I totally forgot about that Clay Fighter theme. I haven't heard that since I rented it at Blockbuster Video... so you know it was a really long time ago. Good call. The similarly zany Earthworm Jim also has a fun little mmbop YOOHOO intro theme with nonsensical vocals, but vocals nonetheless.

But alas, I still can't remember the name of the game I was trying to think of. I think it was unreleased or Japan only. I heard it on the Retro Game Audio podcast, but didn't write the name down.

    6. I don’t know why I didn’t mention this at the time, but the earliest game with an actual vocal song was most likely Psycho Soldier, released by SNK in 1986. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/PsychoSoldier
