  1. Again with the awesome tunes! For some reason, the first two tracks sounded muffled. I haven't heard the originals; it may just be how they sound. Update: Listening to Hybrid Front right now. Muffled and funky! Props to them for sampling Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest(I think) at the beginning of "Tactics Preparation".

I'm fairly certain that the FM Towns used both the YM2612 and the Ricoh PCM chip. The Yamaha chip(the exact one in the Genesis) handles FM synthesis, and the Ricoh PCM chip is specifically for samples. And judging by the samples used in Genocide 2, I'm guessing they weren't using the YM2612 for sampling.

The Marty was hailed because of its ability to produce arcade–perfect ports, but as you noted, the X68000 caught up. Check out the Marty port of Super Street Fighter 2. Definitely beautiful.

And holy mackerel, that PC-Engine track at the end was fantastic! Those stereo effects at the back end of the loop were really cool! Keep it up with the PCE tracks. I've been pretty dismissive of the system's music, which I have felt is overly homogenous.....mostly due to the bass sounding the same in every song. But you and others are getting me to rethink my prejudices.

  2. Glad you liked the show, ND.

I'll have to do a side-by-side comparison for the sample sighting. Which Q-Tip song did it sound like, do you know?

That chip breakdown makes sense. I'm a very "introductory level" console sound chip student.

After looking at some of the old Marty games, I wondered if I could get my hands on one. The answer is yes, but you need to sell a house to afford it.

That particular PCE track was stuck in my head for a while. I have wanted to play it for a couple weeks, but didn't have the right spot. I can understand your criticism of the system, but you never know when a game is going to jump out at you. Especially considering that this game came out only a few months into the console's life cycle.

    1. What I mean is, despite the game coming out so early on the console, it still has a solid sound to it.

    2. Okay, I stand corrected. Listening to that Hybrid Front track again, I’m 100% sure it’s Tone Loc, not Q-Tip. I can’t place the sample, but it’s probably in either “Wild Thing” or “Funky Cold Medina”, since those are the two tracks of his of which I’m most familiar.
